ELIGIBILITY 

  • This award recognizes and honors excellence in architectural design by registered, licensed architects who are members of AIANH.
  • Firms domiciled in NH may submit projects anywhere in the world.
  • Firms domiciled outside NH may only submit projects located in NH. One principal from this firm must be a member of AIANH.   If you are not currently a member, complete the AIANH Component Allied Membership form and submit it with your payment. 
  • Built projects substantially completed after January 1, 2008 are eligible.
  • Each entrant may submit any number of eligible entries with the appropriate fees for each entry.
  • Projects that have been honored in a past AIANH Design Awards program are not eligible (unless the project was submitted in the Unbuilt category and the project has since been built).
  • Projects previously submitted that have not won an award may be entered again, but may not be submitted more than two years consecutively. 
  • The submitted work must be eligible for publicity and reproduction. 


CRITERIA

Entries will be judged on their own merit regardless of project size or type. Primary criteria are overall design excellence including aesthetics, clarity, creativity and appropriate functionality. Submissions should clearly address these areas. The jury may elect to honor projects by building type or other category or may choose to make no such distinctions. The jurors’ decisions will be based solely on the materials submitted.


FEES

First project entry: $220 ($160 + $60 for presentation board production)
Additional project entries:  $185 ($125 + $60 for presentation board production)

Each project submission requires a presentation board that will be used for display during the Awards Banquet and, thereafter, on tour throughout New Hampshire during 2018.

  • Unbuilt architectural designs of any project type are eligible including purely theoretical projects and unbuilt, client-sponsored projects (buildings, interiors, transportation infrastructure, monuments, etc. – all project types). Projects under construction or otherwise apparently assured of construction are not eligible. 
  • There are no restrictions on the presumed or imagined location of projects. The intent is to invite unbuilt work by practicing design professionals, design educators, and design students from New Hampshire.

This award was established in 2014 in honor of Rick and Duffy Monahon as a way to recognize their extraordinary contribution to architecture and preservation in New Hampshire. The award promotes outstanding and exemplary historic preservation projects as defined by their sensitivity to an historic structure and its surrounding environment; the quality of architecture, workmanship, and materials; as well as the degree of challenge or accomplishment and the level of community support for the project.

ELIGIBILITY 

The following project types are eligible:
  • Sensitive Addition/Alteration: a project that successfully integrates an addition/alteration within the architectural style of a building and complements the context and character of an historic district, neighborhood, or specific area.
  • Adaptive Reuse: a project that creatively achieved the reuse of an existing structure originally used for another purpose. The project must have undertaken at least substantial rehabilitation.
  • Appropriate New Construction: a new structure that, through its design and use of building materials, enhances the quality of the built environment. The project must have a positive impact on its immediate surroundings, including historic district, neighborhood or specific area.
  • Innovative Solutions in Preservation: Showing sensitive and creative solutions incorporating issues of sustainability, adaptive reuse and integration of accessibility improvements.

Projects must be located in New Hampshire. The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation and the Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings will be considered in evaluation for this award. 

Only one project will receive this award in a given year.  The jury may elect to not present this award to any of the submissions in this category.

AIANH is committed to excellence in sustainability and is pleased to add this new category to our design awards program. The purpose of this award is to recognize innovative strategies which advance sustainability in the built environment. Low or no energy demand, sustainable materials, healthy indoor air quality and advocacy should be at the forefront of the project which also exemplifies excellent architectural design.

There are two possible Honor Awards for Excellence in Sustainability, one each in the categories of: New Construction and Deep Energy Retrofit.

Secondary criteria: use of local materials, healthy indoor air quality, sustainable advocacy by example, contribution to livable/walkable communities, reduced water use, low-impact site, sustainable landscaping and other measures which exemplify excellence in sustainability.

The undersigned hereby agrees to indemnify and hold harmless AIANH from and against all claims and damages arising out of a breach of the foregoing representations.
